Though she relished socializing in the upper echelon of the Zodiac and admired the Seagoat’s worldly achievements, Venus soon grew weary of living in the practical, predictable and sometimes pretentious tenth house.

Eventually, the heavy Saturnian atmosphere became too much for her, and rather than be engulfed in chains of Capricorn conformity, she defiantly thumbed her nose at them and joined Aquarius's revolutionary band.

Ruled by Uranus, the planet of separation, Aquarius is associated with detachment. Although the earthy side of Venus is uncomfortable living under the water bearer's abstract roof, her airy side embraces it. As the ruler of Libra, Venus not only possesses a strong intellect but a superficiality that is at ease with Aquarian aloofness.

While in the sign of the rebel, Venus enjoys being self-sufficient and revels in her independence.

Likewise, during this time many of us will have zero tolerance for partners who are possessive, manipulative or otherwise try to dictate our lives. Rather, we insist that our partners respect and admire our autonomy and that they do so from a safe distance. In other words, they have to give us space.

Since Aquarius is the sign of brilliance and the ruler of friendship, whenever Venus visits here she experiences a decline in her physical appetites, and instead of longing for the usual sensual and physical delights, the goddess of love craves companionship and hungers for mental stimulation.

Consequently, some of us may find ourselves drawn to a partner who is not our physical type but mesmerizes us just the same.

In addition to presiding over love and affection, Venus is also the natural ruler of money. Although the earthy side of Venus is prudent, her airy side is self-indulgent, and when immersed in this highly unstable sign, her financial judgment is anything but practical.

As a result, our willingness to take financial risks may be greater during this time but our financial acumen may not be up to par.

Throughout the Universe, Aquarius is known as the oddball of the Zodiac, and its reputation for being unstable, eccentric and shocking is well deserved. In fact, the only thing you can count on Aquarians to do with consistency is to fearlessly march to the beat of their own drummer.

After weeks of dressing in "Sagittarius casual" Venus decided it was time to trade in the archer's informal attire for some timeless Capricorn classics.

From the moment she slipped into her conservatively cut yet elegant Ralph Lauren suit, the goddess of love felt her work ethic growing stronger, her authority increasing and her ambition skyrocketing.

Likewise, many of us may be experiencing a renewed determined to achieve certain goals or expand our influence in some way, and with Mercury retrograde it is an excellent time to review and/or revise our action plans.

Although the goddess of love appears aloof and reserved while in Capricorn, in reality her passions run quite deep in this earthy sign that just happens to be one of the most loyal and responsible signs in the zodiac.

While in this faithful sign, Venus takes her promises and commitments seriously and demonstrates them through her loyalty, support and willingness to help. Similarly, at this time we are interested in lasting relationships short-lived romances and passing fads.

Besides love, Venus is also the planetary ruler of money, and as long as she is immersed in Capricorn practicality she is conservative with her cash and only interested in purchases that will stand the test of time.

Consequently, during this time we are likely to prefer investing our discretionary income rather than spending it on pleasurable but frivolous items and activities.

Finally, Venus presides over our values.

While she is in the sign of definition, Venus will not only establish who, what and where her priorities lie but she directs us to do the same.

"I'VE GOT NO PLANETS IN MY SEVENTH HOUSE!" (AND OTHER DISASTERS)

Of all the questions that I'm asked, the one I hear most often is:

"I've got no planets in my seventh house. Does that mean I'm never going to marry?"

Meanwhile, no one has ever asked:

"My second house of income is empty! Does that mean I'm going to be poor?"

The reason no one has asked the latter question is probably because when it comes to our income, we feel we have more control. After all, when it comes to money, there's an obvious and practical plan we can follow that is almost guaranteed to yield success; namely, acquire skills and get a job.

If only relationships were that easy.

In any event, the answer to both of the foregoing questions is:

No, in and of itself, an empty house does not mean that the life areas ruled by it will be absent or diminished in your life.

The reality is that there are 12 houses but only 10 planets, so right from the start at least two houses will be devoid of planets in everyone's chart. If you add in the nodes, Chiron and some of the asteroids, the empty houses may (or may not) in fact be occupied. However, since only planets rule the houses, they carry much more weight in the astrological hierarchy.

When a house is empty, one first looks to the sign on the cusp of the house, and then to the sign, location and aspects of its planetary ruler. The sign on the seventh house cusp describes our attitude towards committed partnerships, what we need from one, and the type of partner that attracts us.

For example, if Cancer is on the seventh house cusp, we don't take such relationships lightly. We need to feel safe, loved and secure, which means we need loyalty and commitment from our partners. We also need financial security. While we don't mind contributing, we are not seeking to take on anyone's financial burdens. Consequently, we tend to be attracted to individuals who are mature and established in a solid career.

If the Moon is in Libra, it tells us that we are attracted to individuals who make a good impression. We want a partner who is well mannered, appreciates the finer things in life, and is willing to cater to us in some way. If this Libra Moon is located in the Third House, the mental connection takes on importance. We want someone who excels in conversation and shares some of our interests.

Next, we look to all of the aspects between the Moon and the rest of our chart and interpret each one. For example, if the Moon is conjunct Jupiter, we are drawn to active, outgoing and optimistic individuals. If it is conjunct Pluto, we are drawn to intense relationships and may attract controlling partners.

When there are planets in the seventh house, and especially if there are three or more, it means there is a greater emphasis on committed relationships in the person's life. Whether the "emphasis" is positive or negative depends upon the planets as well as the aspects to them from the rest of the chart.

While having the Sun, Venus or Jupiter in the seventh house is very attractive, how about Mars, Saturn and Pluto? When these planets occupy the seventh house, the individual has to deal with relationships issues connected to conflict, delay, burdens and control. I am not saying that such a person won't have a happy and fulfilling relationship, but I will say it's highly unlikely to occur early in life.

So to everyone out there who has an empty seventh house but still wishes they had planets in it, I have a Mars-Saturn conjunction in mine that I'd really love to unload.

Mercury in Scorpio

Mercury is in Scorpio from October 12 - November 2

After weeks of lighthearted relationships and superficial discussions, Mercury began to yearn for substance over form.

So bidding Libra farewell, he departed her lovely home and headed straight to the Underworld, a destination with more intensity, more depth and more mystery.

Indeed, the moment he entered Scorpio's domain, Mercury began to snoop around and learn as much as he could about the "mysteries of life" that lie hidden deep beneath the surface.

Since Mercury is the planet of curiosity and Scorpio is the inquisitor of the zodiac, whenever the fleet-footed messenger visits the Underworld he has carte blanche to speculate, investigate, interrogate and extrapolate to his heart's content.

Likewise, if there is something we need to find out, we will not stop until we find the answer, and we will use whatever means necessary to do so, because as long as Mercury is in Scorpio, nothing is sacred.

Words such as "privileged," "confidential" and "privacy" are not in Scorpio's dictionary, which means that medicine chests, emails, diaries, financial statements and the like are all fair game if Mercury decides their content may be necessary to "ascertain the truth" of a matter.

Scorpio is also a secretive sign, so while Mercury is here he won't be gossiping or divulging any secrets (at least not until he enters Sagittarius) but rest assured he will be analyzing every detail.

Similarly, while Mercury is in Scorpio we tend to scrutinize every word, dissect every action, and play it close to the vest. Our memory is enhanced, our concentration is stronger, and we have little interest in idle chatter or superficial relationships.

We can also easily become obsessed with an idea, and if we allow Scorpio's negative traits to take hold of us, we can become possessive, jealous, vindictive and paranoid.

In contrast, if we immerse ourselves in Scorpio's positive qualities, our thoughts become profound, and our relationships become more meaningful. We can also experience transformative, psychological breakthroughs that liberate us from destructive patterns that have created havoc in our lives.

While Mercury is in Scorpio, it is time for a fearless examination of the mysteries of life, and that includes our own psyche.

Though Scorpio's waters appear dark and foreboding, an abundance of treasure is there for the taking.

So take a deep breath and dive in.

You won't come up empty handed.

Venus Enters Libra

Venus is in Libra from 9/14 - 10/9

After several weeks in Virgo’s house of health, service and all around self-improvement, Venus felt completely rejuvenated. She was also tired of the daily work routine and ready to have some fun.

Eager to reclaim her title as the most popular goddess in the zodiac. and headed straight into the most sociable sign of the zodiac and one especially near and dear to her heart: Libra.

As the natural ruler of Libra, Venus is the Mistress of the Seventh House and presides over all one-to-one relationships. Although Venus in Libra justifiably conjures up thoughts of romantic unions, other relationships live in the Seventh House as well, such as business partners, closest friends or even our competitors.

However, while Venus is in Libra, those who are single are likely to yearn for a relationship while those already attached are likely to crave greater commitment. While it is true that Venus in Libra stimulates our desire for partnership, it is Saturn’s presence in this sign that inspires our need for an enduring one.

According to the goddess of love, the secret to having a successful, loving and enduring relationship with another is to first be in a committed loving relationship with yourself, and as she moves forward through this sign she offers us the opportunity to appreciate our unique gifts and become comfortable in our own skin.

As long as Venus is in Libra, we will continue to learn about committed love. What we learn during this time will help prepare us for the next lesson, which is scheduled to begin on October 9. On that day, Venus will cross into Scorpio and begin teaching us about the transforming power of love.

In the meantime, since Libra also speaks to balance, compromise, and harmony the energy of this transit is excellent for all types of negotiations, especially those that establish boundaries or mend fences.

For those of us who experience the change of seasons in the northern hemisphere, the Sun's ingress into Virgo today is a reminder that the backyard BBQ's and beach parties enjoyed under the Cancer and Leo Sun will soon be a memory. As the Sun's movement through the last week of August brings an acute awareness that summer vacation and half-day Fridays will soon be replaced by business as usual.

Since Virgo is the ruler of work, service and daily routine in the natural zodiac, it is only fitting that it not only heralds our return to the daily grind, but celebrates it as well. For more than 100 years, the United States has celebrated Labor Day, the holiday honoring the contributions of the working class to the nation, under the Virgo Sun.

Likewise, Virgo individuals should be honored for the important role they play in the zodiac because when it comes to work and service, no one does it like a Virgo. In fact, they do it so well that you often hear the other signs complaining that Virgo has no interest in having fun. In reality, nothing could be further than the truth.

While it is true that Virgos derive a great deal of satisfaction from a job well done, they do not suffer from "stick in the mud" syndrome. Rather, they suffer from a "sixth house disorder" that relegates them to work (i.e., drudgery), service (i.e., servitude), health (i.e., caretaking) and daily routine (i.e., tedium).

After all, someone has to mind the store while Aries is out blazing new paths, Taurus is balancing his checkbook, Gemini is filibustering, Cancer is cooking, Leo is preening, Libra is exfoliating, Scorpio is plotting (I mean, planning), Sagittarius is exploring, Capricorn is working, Aquarius is protesting and Pisces is communing with the dead.

And that someone is Virgo, who is on call and at your service 24/7 to do the grunt work, handle the emergencies and clean up the mess.

Another common complaint against those born under the sign of perfection is that they are overly critical of everyone and everything.

To some extent this reputation is deserved. However, in contrast to some of the other signs that are more of the "do as I say, not as I do" variety (and whose identities being withheld to protect the guilty), Virgos are just as hard (or harder) on themselves. Whereas the rest of the zodiac only confronts their imperfections on a bad day, Virgo’s innate desire for perfectionism turns every day "judgment day." Consequently, many born under this sign endure a life-long struggle with self-esteem.

Despite the seemingly never-ending list of burdens, responsibilities and obligations that plague them, Virgos will always make time for their friends and will drop everything to come to their aid in times of trouble.

While other signs may be flashier, wealthier, louder and yes, happier, when the going gets tough, you can count on your Virgo friend to have your back.

Venus Enters Virgo

After three and a half weeks of non-stop flirting, partying and shopping while in Leo, Venus knew it was time to move on to a destination where she could repair her health, regain her strength and rebuild her finances.

Yes, it was time to enter Virgo, the one sign that can whip anyone into shape.

While Venus is in Virgo, she is in her fall, which means that her energy is depleted. However, since her earthy side is very much at home in the sign of perfection, she has little trouble meeting its expectations. Though Virgo’s regimens may be demanding, Venus embraces the mandatory dietary and fitness plans it prescribes because she knows it’s for her own good. After all, as the natural ruler of the sixth house of health, Virgo is a gifted healer.

Venus rules money, and while in the sign of accounting she also gets serious about money. While she is here, it is an excellent time to review our budget and take steps to improve our finances.

When it comes to romance, the Virgin’s reputation for being selective is well deserved. However, she is not a prude, and while Venus is here she encourages us to examine our sexuality and determine whether our needs are being met, repressed or denied.

Although she may seem indifferent to it while in Virgo, the truth of the matter is that the goddess of love is never more devoted to her partner than when she is in this dedicated sign. However, the same emotional composure that enables her to keep her head during emergencies also influences how she expresses affection.

As long as she is in Virgo’s house, Venus is decidedly uncomfortable with emotional grandstanding or public displays of affection. Instead, she expresses her love through kind gestures and thoughtful acts of service. A true believer in the maxim “actions speak louder than words,” Venus in Virgo practices what she preaches.

Likewise, it is time for us to take love seriously and either honor our commitments or end them.

While Venus is in Virgo, she will stand by us for better or worse. The question is: Will we do the same?

Mars Enters Cancer

As the planetary ruler of war, Mars is used to wearing armor and wielding swords, so when the Crab directed him to don an apron and get cooking, the stew wasn’t the only pot to be stirred.

In a matter of minutes, Cancer’s cozy cookery was transformed into Hell’s Kitchen as Martian anger shattered the domestic bliss the Crab had worked so diligently to cultivate.

As the ruler of Aries, the warrior’s relationship with Cancer is by nature a stressful one, which means that unless Mars finds a healthy was to relieve his tension the next six weeks will be punctuated by domestic disturbances.

Fortunately, Mars loves a challenge.

With Mercury retrograde until August 26 and in the shadow until September 9, there is a greater likelihood for misunderstandings while Mars is in Cancer, and since this fiery planet energizes whatever it touches, emotions are intensified.

Although Mars will defend and protect the family against any and all external threats, he is likely to be the cause of many of its internal arguments.

After all, Mars is renowned for his courage and confidence, not patience and tolerance, and given the planetary energies this month he is going to have to dig deep to avoid an all-out war.

Negatively, our fury is easily ignited, and as Mars engages Uranus, Pluto and Saturn at various times this month we will need to exercise serious self-restraint if we wish to avoid a full-blown eruption.

A positive use of this Martian energy would be to channel it into a productive outlet such as making physical changes in the home. Whether it is redecorating, making repairs, building a deck or some other home improvement project, Mars can be counted on to do his share of the work.

Mars is also known for his leadership abilities, and while in Cancer he immediately takes charge of the household. Consequently, during this time we may feel motivated to play a more active role within our own tribe.

Finally, while Mars is in Cancer our physical appetites are also likely to be stimulated. Some of us will crave food but most of us will crave intimacy, and when Mars is involved the odds of attaining our desires are vastly improved.

Of course, attainment and fulfillment is not necessarily the same thing.

An ego-driven sign, at any other time Mars wouldn’t notice the difference and even if he did, he wouldn’t care as long as his own needs were being met.

However, while immersed in Cancer sensitivity Mars experiences an emotional need to nurture someone else.

For Mars, who beat out every other sign for the nickname “I, I, I, me, me, me,” this is not a comfortable position.

Likewise, it may not be comfortable for us either.

Nevertheless, like Mars, we too must rise to the challenge and try to strike a balance between satisfying our own ego and meeting the needs of another.

And even if we lose, Mars will still be proud as long as we go down fighting.

Venus Enters Leo

After weeks of sharing hearty meals with her family and staying close to home, Venus was bored with the Crab's domestic lifestyle and yearned to be back on the social scene.

So on July 28th, dressed to the nines and determined to make up for lost time, Venus bid farewell to her family and made a grand entrance into the most glamorous, flamboyant and extroverted sign of the zodiac: Leo.

While the goddess of love is the sign of showmanship, even the shyest of us will feel more flirtatious and be more willing to take the initiative when it comes to matters of the heart.

And for those of us who are anything but reserved, wearing our heart on our sleeve is likely to become our newest summer accessory.

In addition to romantic affairs, Venus also presides over financial ones, and since Leo is known for its generosity and extravagance, her presence here can inspire even the most frugal of us to spend some money.

Rowling.

Indeed, there is no other sign that celebrates life with as much joy, enthusiasm and panache as Leo, and both sexes appreciate an extravagant lifestyle.

Although their innate nature is warm, loving and generous, Leo has a well-deserved reputation for being vain, self-centered and melodramatic and their fiery nature that can singe a heart as easily as it warms it.

When they feel secure and appreciated, however, they lavish others with affection, attention and praise. In fact, when it comes to spoiling loved ones Leos have more than just big hearts; they have big budgets as well.

Happy Birthday to Cancer: Celebrating the Crab

The Ram, the Bull, the Lion, and the Scorpion. Each in its own way is powerful, intimidating, and even deadly.

And then there’s the Crab.

While it’s true that its pincers can cause considerable, even excruciating pain, the Crab does not inspire awe or fear as does a charging ram, a raging bull, a crouching lion or a crawling scorpion. Crabs are scavengers, not predators, and the only things they seem to inspire are

salivary glands.

They are also temperamental creatures that are well recognized for their combative ways. The males are known for fighting other males to gain access to lady crabs, and all crabs seem to bicker over the best hiding places on the beach.

Like their crustacean counterparts, the human Cancer is also quite moody. In fact, so much so that sometimes it can be difficult to keep up with their changing emotions. As my grandmother used to say about her Cancer-born son, “The way you leave him, you don’t find him.”

Of course, there is a very good reason why Cancers are so moody: the Moon rules them. After all, when one considers the effects of the Moon upon the tides, how can mere mortals such as Cancers be expected to resist the lunar influence? They can’t, which is why we need to give them a “free pass” every now and then.

Furthermore, in contrast to Aquarians who can live the life of a nomad or Sagittarians who can live out of a suitcase, Cancers need to put down roots. As the zodiac’s natural ruler of the fourth house of home, Cancers have a strong need to establish their own home, as well as furnish it, landscape it, and populate it.

Cancer also rules the stomach, and the good news is that both the he-crabs and the she-crabs are usually excellent cooks. As the nurturers of the zodiac, Cancers truly understand the soothing effect of comfort foods. Even better, their cupboards are always well stocked, which is why you can trust me when I tell you that Old Mother Hubbard was not a Moon Maiden.

Although Cancer is associated with domesticity, it does very well in the business world. Thrifty by nature, Cancers are the big savers of the zodiac. In fact, when it comes to net worth, Cancers have been known to amass quite a fortune. Consider, for example, the wealth of Nelson Rockefeller, Bill Cosby, Leona Helmsley, Vera Wang, and Merv Griffin (just to name a few).

True, the Crab lacks the physical force of the Ram, the stamina of the Bull, the regal bearing of the Lion, and the sting of the Scorpion, but so what? After all, one soon grows weary from having to sustain strenuous activity, maintain sizable egos and obtain numerous antidotes.

Their water-sign sensitivity, Moon-given intuition and natural ability to soothe us when we need it most goes a long way to help us forget, or at least overlook, bouts of Cancer crabbiness and Moon-inspired madness.

Yes, they tend to be frugal, but that’s why they always have food in their fridge, money in their bank accounts and love in their hearts.

The Summer Solstice: A Chance to Change Course

The summer solstice occurs when the Sun reaches 0° of Cancer, and this year it takes place at exactly 1:17 PM EDT on June 21, 2011.

Although widely celebrated for being the longest day, its true significance is that it represents the midpoint of the year, and its occurrence in the nostalgic sign is no coincidence because as we reach the halfway mark, it is time to reflect upon the past and ask ourselves:

What did we do during the past six months?

Did we realize any tangible accomplishments or have we just been treading water?

It is important that we evaluate our lives and determine whether we have been heading in the direction of our dreams or have been drifting along and hoping for a fateful intervention that delivers it right to our doorstep.

Just like mid-life, the summer solstice is a wake-up call that reminds us that while we still have plenty of time left on the meter, the time is nevertheless ticking away.

If we are satisfied with our progress, then well done and "full steam ahead."

If not, then we must resolve to make meaningful changes even if it means altering our course.

After all, with six months ahead of us, there is still ample time for a new beginning and the achievement of some (if not all) of our goals before we reach our next checkpoint: the winter solstice.

This year the winter solstice occurs on December 22 at 0:30 AM EDT, and at that time we will be asked to review the past year as we prepare for the new one.

Although it is still six months away, the final question we need to ask ourselves now is:

When New Year's Eve arrives, do we want to be toasting the new year or regretting this one?

Mercury in Cancer Gives Voice to Our Feelings

Mercury is in Cancer from 6/16 - 7/2

While Mercury is in the family-oriented sign of Cancer, he is likely to find that life in the Crab Shack is a little too close for his comfort.

Although renowned for his ability to quickly adapt to changing circumstances, Mercury's flexibility will be put to the test by his landlord's moodiness, as well as her strong need for emotional attachment that earned her a well-deserved reputation as one of the clingiest signs in the zodiac.

As the natural ruler of Gemini, not only does the airy side of Mercury prefer to live inside his head but he is quite particular about who visits him there.

Whereas logic, intellect and reason are always welcome visitors and enjoy an "open door" policy, feelings are typically greeted by a Do Not Disturb sign.

However, with every passing day Mercury begins to feel more at ease. As he lets down his guard his curiosity gets the better of him, and before he knows it, Mercury is exploring every aspect of this watery world.

As he allows his intellect to mingle with the Crab's diverse set of emotions, Mercury discovers that in Cancer's home he not only has permission to express his feelings but is strongly encouraged to do so.

Following the June 1 new moon solar eclipse at 11° Gemini will be a lunar eclipse at 24° Sagittarius on June 15 and then another new moon solar eclipse at 9° Cancer on July 1.

Eclipses tend to bring changes that come about in a sudden or unexpected manner, so even the positive ones are likely to throw us off balance.

Whenever an eclipse occurs, it intensifies the lunation’s energy. Although an eclipse may bring an event right around the time it occurs, it is not unusual for an eclipse-related incident to take place several days before while its energy is building up.

Furthermore, this surge of planetary energy extends the influence of the lunation for as long as six months, and whenever a transiting planet activates the eclipse point by conjunction or square, its energy can trigger eclipse-related events.

After several weeks of talking about his feelings while immersed in Pisces' emotional waters, it was time for Mercury to wring out his towel and return to dry land.

Ruled by Mars, Aries is the warrior of the zodiac and from the moment he stepped into this aggressive sign, Mercury was ready to rumble.

Consequently, while Mercury is in Aries we are also able to grasp new concepts easily and may be very motivated to study now. However, our patience with others is also likely to wear thin more easily, and words are apt to fly out of our mouth because we are prone to knee jerk reactions.

As the first sign of the zodiac and the natural ruler of the first house, Aries' focus is often on "me, myself and I," and during this time, Mercury can be very self-centered. In turn, our thoughts may be so focused on ourselves that we completely forget to consider others.

NEW ZODIAC SIGNS? DEBUNKING THIS COSMIC MYTH

So here we go again, except this time it isn't Bill Nye but rather astronomer Parke Kunkle from the Minnesota Planetarium Society claiming that astrologers have been using the "wrong" signs for ages.

The basis of this claim is the precession of the zodiac, which speaks to the slow wobble of the earth on its axis.

For those of you who may recall high school science, the earth's axis is not stable, and it reacts to the gravitational pull of the Sun and the Moon. The shifting of the earth's axis causes a shift that in turn causes the Vernal Equinox to move in the opposite direction from the standard zodiac.

Consequently, the constellations are no longer in the same place, and nowadays when the Sun enters the vernal equinox in the sign of Aries, it is actually in the constellation of Pisces.

With that said, the "you think you're an Aries but you're really a Pisces" argument appears to be a valid one.

It is not.

In fact, this "scientifically based" argument is rooted in ignorance.

Those of us who practice Tropical Astrology, which is the most common form of astrology in Western culture, use and rely upon the SIGNS of the zodiac, not the constellations.

In Western astrology, planetary positions are measured in celestial longitude from 0° Aries, which is the point of the Vernal Equinox. Therefore, the SEASONS are the reference points for the zodiac signs, not the constellations.

Moreover, with the exception of the Sun, astrological symbolism is chiefly connected to the planets, not the stars, and the positions of the planets are measured according to where they are in the signs.

Although astrologers in Eastern cultures generally practice sidereal astrology, which does use the stars as reference points, they too divide the ecliptic into equal signs. This is not the same as the constellations which are unequal.

So as much as I might prefer to be ruled by Jupiter, the cold hard Saturnian reality is that I'm ruled by, well, Saturn.

And to those who try to discredit astrology by using the scientifically-based precession argument (and yes, I'm speaking to you Parke Kunkle), I suggest you act like the scientist you profess to be and actually do some research.

If you do, you'll discover that astrology is a profession that has endured throughout the ages.

Not only that, but it will save you a lot of embarrassment.

Mercury Enters Capricorn

Mercury is in Capricorn from January 13 - February 3

At 6:25 AM EST this morning and while still in the shadow, Mercury returned to the sign of discipline, definition and ambition.

When Mercury is in Capricorn, his earthy side - courtesy of his Virgo rulership - comes to the fore. Not only is he more sensible in Capricorn, but he is also more serious, focused, organized, determined and yes, conservative.

Likewise, we too tend to be more cautious as we contemplate our future from 2011's starting line.

While Mercury is here, we view the future through practical eyes and are mindful that unless we lay a solid foundation for our vision, we will not be able to build upon it.

During this time, we are being given the opportunity to create a realistic plan of action that will help us achieve our goals.

If we successfully establish the "nuts and bolts" of our plan while Mercury is in Capricorn, we will then be able to add the "bells and whistles" when he enters Aquarius.

Venus Enters Sagittarius

After weeks of immersing herself in intense emotional experiences while in Scorpio, Venus reached her saturation point and departed the Underworld in search of sunnier pastures.

Stepping out of Scorpio, she followed the well-lit path before her and was soon welcomed into the friendly, optimistic and restless sign of Sagittarius.

When it comes to romance, the ninth sign of the zodiac is often hard to pin down. Ruled by Jupiter, Sagittarius views life as a never-ending journey without any boundaries. Although not intentionally fickle, its restless spirit and short attention span makes it rather unreliable. The archer truly believes that variety is the spice of life and that conviction extends to romance as well.

Consequently, while Venus is in Sagittarius, she desires a relationship but she is not needy. Although the fire element will encourage her to be flirtatious, at heart she is an independent bachelorette who enjoys companionship on her own terms.

Likewise, during this time we too may find that we are less needy and feel more comfortable in our own skin. We may also feel more optimistic, more lighthearted and yes, perhaps even playful.

Venus also rules money, and when she's in Sagittarius she can be very generous. She can also be quite the spendthrift.

Although we tend to think of this Jupiter-ruled sign as being one of abundance, it is important to remember that it also rules excess and waste.

Therefore, some of us may need to exercise financial restraint now or else we will risk making impractical purchases and/or blowing our budget.

Finally, Venus will be in the sign of higher knowledge until February 3, and until that time we will have the opportunity to improve ourselves through personal growth.

New Year Dawns With All Planets in Direct Motion

As the New Year dawns, ALL of the transiting planets, Chiron and the four major asteroids will be moving in direct motion.

Although we had a taste of this energy from December 5 - 10, we will soon experience it for almost an entire month.

When Mercury stations direct at 2:21 AM EST on December 30, it will join the rest of the planetary troop and together they will cross into the New Year in forward motion and continue in unison until Saturn breaks rank with them by stationing retrograde at 1:11 AM EST on January 26.

Until that time, the collective planetary energy will be the equivalent of a cosmic "green light" that signals the time is ripe for us to move forward as well.

If any area of your life has been stalled, this cosmic event may be the window through which stagnant energy is released as well as the door that leads to a clear path.

This planetary dynamic will also be the recipient of a strong boost of energy from the New Moon Solar Eclipse on January 4 at 4:03 AM EST.

New Moons support initiation, and this one is not only fueled by the power of an eclipse but also takes place in cardinal (leadership, action-oriented) sign of Capricorn.

Whereas some planets, such as the emotional Moon, might prefer to stay elsewhere, Mars looks forward to his biennial stay in Capricorn because it is the sign of his exaltation.

In other words, when Mars is in Capricorn, he functions at the highest level.

As the ruler of leadership and ambition, Mars is very much at home in this achievement-oriented sign, and his natural ambition, courage and determination are enhanced by Capricorn practicality, discipline and patience.

Mercury will be in Capricorn from November 30 – December 17

While visiting the restless and freedom-loving sign of Sagittarius, Mercury took advantage of every opportunity to expand his knowledge, broaden his horizons and push some boundaries.

Although he enjoyed every minute in this friendly and sociable sign, the fleet-footed messenger soon began to realize that he was spreading himself a bit too thin and needed to brush up on his organizational skills.

So with his passport tucked securely under his hat (and a round-trip ticket back to Sag up his sleeve), Mercury bid farewell to the ruler of foreign places (in several different languages of course) and boarded the next flight to Capricorn.

When Mercury is in Capricorn, our thought processes become more defined, our focus become sharper, and we think in practical terms. We become more concerned with material issues and make mental notes in connection with our professional goals and personal ambitions.

We also become more aware of our reputation and how our family, friends, co-workers, superiors and yes, even the public, views us. During this time, we organize our thoughts, set goals, outline ideas and make concrete plans for the future.

Mercury entered the sign of ambition, definition and practicality with high hopes, but in the days that followed he experienced something that was oddly akin to jet lag.

Fatigued, sluggish and unable to concentrate, Mercury failed to pass muster in Capricorn’s classes on focus, persistence and discipline. Worse yet, he knew he wasn’t going to even come close to a passing grade in organizational skills, which is what he came here for in the first place.

Weary from it all, Mercury looked at the calendar and suddenly recognized the source of his problem:

On December 10, he would be crossing into Retrograde Time, which meant he was operating under the influence of the shadow period.

Now that he understood the problem, Mercury went straight to the Celestial Taskmaster to make an apology, plead his case and seek permission to retake the classes after the shadow faded. Fortunately for Mercury, Saturn is currently draped in Libra’s judicious robes, and after serious consideration granted his request.

Likewise, while Mercury is retrograde in Capricorn, we are asked to reconsider our perception of success and review our professional and personal standing.

We are also being asked to redefine our ambitions and reconsider the path we are taking to achieve them. During this time, we may discover that we need to revise a business plan, re-establish past relationships or perhaps relinquish outdated ideas.

On December 18, Mercury will re-enter Sagittarius for a three-week visit. On December 30, after completing any unfinished business in the archer’s house, he will station direct and ring in the New Year in the sign of abundance and optimism.

As Mercury crosses into 2011, he will carry a message of hope with him, and when he returns to Capricorn on January 13, he will begin working on the foundation to support his dream.

At that time, we will follow his lead and begin laying the groundwork for our own newfound vision.

Moreover, since Mars is the planet of action, you can bet that his passport is within easy reach while he’s immersed in the sign of wanderlust.

Similarly, we too may feel the urge to expand our physical boundaries by traveling to a new location or exploring a new culture. It doesn’t matter whether we’re inspired to visit a new country, check out a new neighborhood or sample a new cuisine. The key is that we feel motivated to move beyond our current boundaries and seek out new experiences.

Education is another way to expand one’s horizons. Since Sagittarius rules the house of higher learning and Mars is the planet of initiation, we may be prompted to increase our knowledge through study.

While formal education is one avenue, it is not the only one. During this time, many of us may opt to increase our wisdom by accessing information via other Sagittarian-ruled mediums such as publishing, broadcasting and long-distance learning.

Mars also speaks to our passions, and while it is in the sign of truth and social justice, some of us could become quite fervent about politics, religion, philosophy, legislation and social causes.

Since Mars speaks to leadership ability, the possibility of taking an active role in a political or community group is heightened. Should this be the case, bear in mind that the unbridled aggression and enthusiasm of Mars can turn vision into fanaticism, arrogance and righteousness when placed in the sign of the archer.

Finally, as the knight of the zodiac, Mars is always ready to rise to the occasion, embark upon a journey and rescue us from danger.

However, while saturated in the sign of religion and philosophy, he is likely to find himself engaged in a spiritual quest where he will come to learn that growth is a process, not a destination.

Is Astrology 2000 Years Out of Date?

If you believe in astrology, or should I say if you let people know that you believe in astrology, somewhere along the way someone is going to ask you to explain how astrology can work since the constellations are no longer in the same place as they were 2000 years ago.

Whenever I hear someone challenging the validity of astrology, my first thought is "res ipsa loquitur," a Latin phrase I learned in law school that means "the thing speaks for itself."

To me, astrology does just that because it works. Is it 100% accurate all of the time? Of course not. Astrologers have misreads just like meteorologists, radiologists, stock market analysts, real estate analysts, political analysts and...well, you get the idea, yet the others are not subject to the same standards or scrutiny.

Over the years, many individuals have challenged me by smugly pronouncing that scientifically speaking, astrology is about 2000 years out of date because due to the precession of the zodiac, the constellations are no longer in the same place.

You see, thousands of years ago on the vernal equinox, the Sun was in the constellation of Aries, but nowadays when the Sun enters the vernal equinox in the sign of Aries, it is actually in the constellation of Pisces.

This is due to the precession of the zodiac, which speaks to the slow wobble of the earth on its axis.

For those of you who may recall high school science, the earth's axis is not stable, and it reacts to the gravitational pull of the Sun and the Moon. The shifting of the earth's axis causes a shift that in turn causes the Vernal Equinox to move in the opposite direction from the standard zodiac.

With that said, the "you think you're an Aries but you're really a Pisces" argument seems to be a sound one.

"Ah, but appearances can be deceiving," says Neptune, who as the planetary ruler of deception speaks with the utmost authority.

Indeed they are.

This "scientifically based" argument is nothing more than smoke and mirrors because those of us who practice Tropical Astrology, which is the most common form of astrology in Western culture, use and rely upon the SIGNS of the zodiac, not the constellations.

In Western astrology, planetary positions are measured in celestial longitude from 0° Aries, which is the point of the Vernal Equinox.

Therefore, the SEASONS are the reference points for the zodiac signs, not the constellations.

Moreover, with the exception of the Sun, astrological symbolism is chiefly connected to the planets, not the stars, and the positions of the planets are measured according to where they are in the signs.

Although astrologers in Eastern cultures generally practice sidereal astrology, which does use the stars as reference points, they too divide the ecliptic into equal signs. This is not the same as the constellations. which are unequal.

So as much as I might prefer to be ruled by Jupiter, the cold hard Saturnian reality is that I'm ruled by, well, Saturn.

And to those who try to discredit astrology by using the scientifically-based precession argument (and that includes you Bill Nye), I suggest you take the time to actually learn about it before condemning it.

In other words, be the "science guy or gal" you profess to be and do the research. If you do, you'll discover that astrology is a profession that has endured throughout the ages.

It is not 2000 years out of date.

If anything, it's ahead of its time.

MARS IN SCORPIO: MORE THAN JUST SMOKIN' HOT

Mars is in Scorpio from September 14 – October 28

Like a bloodhound tracking the scent of a missing person, Mars entered Scorpio in hot pursuit of the planet of love.

Although Mars will be only a few short degrees behind her, Venus will continue to remain just beyond his grasp. For Mars, the thrill of the chase adds to the excitement, and when he finally catches up to her on October 3, she will retrograde straight into his protective embrace.

In contrast to Venus, who finds Scorpio’s domain somewhat unsettling, Mars feels right at home in the Underworld. After all, he used to rule it until Pluto came along and rightfully laid claim to his throne, and as a nod to his outstanding job as its interim guardian, he was granted the title of co-ruler.

When Mars is in Scorpio, he is passionate, focused and determined, and as he travels through the sign of transformation, we may experience increased energy, enhanced concentration, and a burning desire to achieve our goals.

However, as he navigates his way through the Underworld, Mars can also be ruthless, obsessive and controlling. As a result, some of us may find that our behavior becomes callous, paranoid and uncompromising.

If we are to experience the higher vibration of Scorpio, we must focus on actions that are rooted in love and are of service to others.

At its best, Mars is far more than the planet of action and leadership; it is the planet of heroism. It is Mars who marches into battle, confronts dangerous criminals, enters blazing buildings and fearlessly risks his life for ours.

His ease with mortality comes from years of presiding over the Underworld. Like Pluto, Mars has an innate understanding of birth, death and transformation.

Mars understands that life does not end with death; rather, it begins anew in an altered form.

Consequently, while Mars is in Scorpio, the potential exists for each one of us to transform our lives by letting a situation, relationship or belief “die.”

Like Venus, we too are uncomfortable in Scorpio’s mysterious world, but from now until October 28, there is no better time to take a leap of faith into the unknown because as long as Mars is in Scorpio, we can take it secure in the knowledge that if we fall, a Martian safety net will be there to catch us.

MARS ENTERS LIBRA AND HE'S READY TO RUMBLE

Mars is in Libra from July 29 – September 14

Like Grant took Richmond, Mars stormed into Libra and immediately secured a position in the planetary minefield known as the transiting Cardinal T-Square.

Teaming up with Saturn in a conjunction, Mars added his potent energy to the already powerful planetary configuration involving Saturn (Libra), Jupiter and Uranus (Aries) and Pluto (Capricorn).

During the course of the next week or so, Mars will create friction within this already combustible configuration, and as he continues to mix it up, it will become even more volatile.

In addition to creating significant tension within this planetary chain gang, Mars will activate the powerful July 26 lunar eclipse point (4 Capricorn 46 and conjunct Pluto), and from August 25 - 29, it will activate the July 19 solar eclipse point (19 Cancer 24) as well.

In predictive astrology, Mars is well known for “pulling the trigger” on major transits, and it is frequently active during life-defining moments and events.

Although we will not recognize the full impact of this historical transit for months or years to come, you can rest assured that in 20/20 hindsight, the Martian influence will be quite apparent.

Collectively, many of us will experience this stressful planetary activity on an energetic, physical and/or emotional level as the immense tension generated by this planetary activity gives rise to overwrought nerves, unexplained anxieties and restless slumber.

Individually, those of us with natal planets in the first 5 degrees of cardinal (Aries, Libra, Cancer, Capricorn) signs are likely to experience this Mars-infused T-Square on a personal level.

With that said, for those of you who feel as though the universe is wearing cleats as it tap dances on your last nerve, take heart.

A TIME TO DEFINE AND BALANCE RELATIONSHIPS

On July 21, Saturn re-enters Libra, where it will remain until October 6, 2012.

Saturn is about definition and commitment, and while it is in the sign that rules the seventh house, it is asking us to define our one-on-one relationships. In addition to marriage and business partnerships, the seventh house also holds our very best friends and they too will come under Saturn's scrutiny.

On a personal level, Saturn in Libra directs us to examine our closest relationships and determine whether or not they are meeting our needs. If they are, then we need to commit to them. If not, then we must either remedy them or abandon them.

Initially, we may be able to get away with turning a blind eye and a deaf ear to Saturn's directive, but in time the celestial taskmaster will take notice of our errant behavior, and he will force us to confront the issue by creating situations that test our relationships.

Those that pass this test will endure well beyond Saturn's entry into Scorpio, and those that do not will leave your life well before it. Although the result will be the same whether our relationships are pruned voluntarily or by force, the experience will be much easier if we initiate the process.

However, since Libra rules diplomacy, we are very likely to be presented with opportunities to part ways under amicable circumstances.

On a collective level, Saturn in Libra will inspire a renewed appreciation for marriage and committed unions.

During the years since Uranus, ruler of unconventional ideas, independence and instability, completed its transit the sign of marriage in the mid-1970’s, a significant segment of the population has come to believe that monogamy is an unrealistic expectation and marriage is an archaic institution.

In contrast to Uranus, Saturn represents convention, loyalty and endurance, which is why we can expect many with a “no strings attached” attitude to have a change of heart in favor of the “ties that bind.” Moreover, Saturn’s work will be made even easier by the uncertainty of changing times stemming from the cardinal climax and other powerful transits in the years leading up to December 21, 2012.

We can also expect Saturn in Libra to impact us on a political level.

In astrology, Saturn also signifies authority while Libra also represents the scales of justice. As Saturn makes its way through Libra, the issue of same sex marriage will be working its way through the U.S. courts. Consequently, Saturn in Libra will ultimately define who can (or cannot) get married.

Since Libra’s scales represent balance as well as justice, this transit also asks that we evaluate the issue of reciprocity in all of our relationships.

Is there a fair balance of give and take or are we guilty of either extreme?

If we are overly accommodating or allow others to take advantage of our time, money or good nature, then it is time to establish boundaries and stick to them.

If we are overly demanding or take advantage of other people, then it is time for us to change our selfish ways.

Finally, since Saturn is exalted in Libra, the decisions and changes made during this transit are not only likely to endure, they are likely to be respected as well.
